Cal off a surprise victory over a ranked UCLA. How’d they do it? They protected their QB. Cals’ Zach Maynard had been sacked 25 times in the first five games. Granted the Golden Bears did give up 3 sacks but there is a big difference mentally in 5 sacks.
In order for Mike Leachs’ Cougars to win they need to pressure the ball if Zach is pressured he makes bad decisions. But we know that the defensive side of the ball is not Leach’s specialty. But in light of his recent comments about seniority he is sure to get a spark out of some of those defensive seniors. The thing to keep in mind for the Leach Offense is to protect the QB and give him time to make a decision. Both Jeff Tuel and Connor Halliday are not settled in this pass heavy system both having as many interceptions as touchdowns and though Jeff Tuel is more efficient on paper you must note that it is easier coming off the bench in a game then it is starting. Leach likes Halliday I think he’ll stick with them and if the O-line can give him time he can pull off the win.
Now the Cal Golden Bears had 4 interception against UCLA so I think they will do a good job of rattling which ever QB Leach chooses. And that is the reason I think they’ll win, coming off a big win I feel the momentum is to great for Leach & Co.
