What Greedy is Watching 2013

Another college football season has arrived….

This off season built a lot of things up for this coming season. From the issues in Athens, GA with the players disipline issues, to  Heisman winner Johnny “Football” Manzeil … I know most players just want to get back to the game so without further a do here is who I will be watching:

Kasey Carrier – Former Pearland Oiler and senior in New Mexico Lobos backfield if he can stay healthy he will definitely surprise many scouts and running back enthusiasts

Garrett Gilbert – Former Texas Longhorn who held his own against a good Alabama team in his freshman season. He is now a senior with the SMU Mustangs and that playbook is tailored for a gun-slinging QB to shine.

GT Yellow Jackets – Alma Mater

Oregon Ducks – First year without Chip Kelly but still rank #2 after the second week. I expect the sophomore QB Mariota to continue to stifle Pac-12 defenses.

Mike Leach & WAZZU – After Mike Leaches wrongful termination at Tech Tech I have to show my support and with Saturday’s upset of #25 USC the Cougars look to earn some much needed respect in the Pac-12

CAN’T FORGET Kasey Carrier (Go Oilers!)

UNM Record: 338 yds Rushing

UNM Record: 338 yds Rushing

If you didn’t guess it Kasey is a former Pearland Oiler team mate of mine. He is in his senior season with the New Mexico Lobos and in short the past three seasons has been their entire offense.

After the UTEP game this season he looks to continue his dominance on the ground. He put up nearly 300 yards with a nearly 6 yard per carry average in the second game of the season. The 6 yard average is on par with his season average last year in which he ran for nearly 1500 yards. Look for Kasey to dominate with his speed and agility whether outside or up the middle. If he can get  past the D-Line his lateral movement can create space and he will be on fire if he can catch some good blocks in the upper levels of the defense.

SMU V. Houston (Week 8 2012)

So SMU lost to Tulane …

Like with the loss to TCU I tell them they need to move on. And this time they did in a record breaking way. They played a dramatically different U of H team then we’ve seen in the last few years. And the result as it has been all season for the Mustangs … defense, wins, ball-games. The ‘stang defense created 6 interceptions and returned three of them for a touchdown. One of which a nose tackle read screen and played the ball instead of rushing the QB. This along with the ability of the Gilbert/Jones offense to score allowed for SMU to break scoring record. 72 point in a game which breaks the old record of 70 that was set in 1920.

What this game meant for Garrett Gilbert hopefully a the mark of a turn around Gilbert was 60% completions on the night the hishest of the season. The scoring and short fields from the defense helped he throw 4 TDs and 265 yds for the game. Though, in this game, he threw the second least number of passes he seem to have a better handle on the offense.

Next week they have Memphis who average 18.5 points a game which is good news for this defense strong Mustang team, as they average 23 points per game,  and have the stronger schedule which definitely weighs down their scoring numbers. BUT DON’T DO WHAT YOU DID AGAINST TULANE AGAINST MEMPHIS

The Ducks Vs. The Sun Devils (Week 8 2012)

This week the Ducks play early and at half time this game is all but in the bag as they were up 43 – 7.

The media was calling this the first true road test for the Ducks and it was for the one play that ASU had their star defensive lineman Will Sutton. On the first play from scrimmage the defensive terror that is Sutton knocked loose the ball and injured his knee. Leaving him unable to help his Sun Devil teammates as they got thumped for the rest of the half.

One thing to note as this game comes to a close is that Marcus Mariota ran for a TD, threw for a TD, and caught a TD. Good win for the Ducks Colorado next week don’t look past them.

Oh and ASU u may wanna change your motivational strategy… It didn’t work

Washington State v. Cal (Week 7 2012)

Cal off a surprise victory over a ranked UCLA. How’d they do it? They protected their QB. Cals’ Zach Maynard had been sacked 25 times in the first five games. Granted the Golden Bears did give up 3 sacks but there is a big difference mentally in 5 sacks.

In order for Mike Leachs’ Cougars to win they need to pressure the ball if Zach is pressured he makes bad decisions. But we know that the defensive side of the ball is not Leach’s specialty. But in light of his recent comments about seniority he is sure to get a spark out of some of those defensive seniors. The thing to keep in mind for the  Leach Offense is to protect the QB and give him time to make a decision. Both Jeff Tuel and Connor Halliday are not settled in this pass heavy system both having as many interceptions as touchdowns and though Jeff Tuel is more efficient on paper you must note that it is easier coming off the bench in a game then it is starting.  Leach likes Halliday I think he’ll stick with them and if the O-line can give him time he can pull off the win.

Now the Cal Golden Bears had 4 interception against UCLA so I think they will do a good job of rattling which ever QB Leach chooses. And that is the reason  I think they’ll win, coming off a big win I feel the momentum is to great for Leach & Co.

SMU v. Tulane (Week 7 2012)

Let it Rip is all I would tell Garrett Gilbert in the locker room this week. Facing the struggling Tulane Green Wave, who haven’t won a game since Sept 17 2011, yes last year, a 15 game losing streak.  The SMU defense has looked better then I expected this year, especially last week as they shut out the UTEP Miners. If they keep that momentum this Tulane team should be in a pickle early.

If Tulane has any hope they need to keep a QB healthy and help him out short completions, run the ball, and average 3 yds a play.

Mountaineers Vs. Red Raiders (Week 7 2012)

If last weeks game verses Boomer Sooner is any indication as to the talent of the Texas Tech defensive back field then they are in deep trouble as the Geno Smith lead Mountaineers roll into town.

Geno Smith is on a tear this season even in the new conference he seems to have picked up where he left off last season. Now that he has thrown 204 passes without an interception he looks to continue the tread against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders on paper seem to be more of a speed bump to this offense then anything so look out if your a Red Raider fan.

The one thing that Texas Tech does have going for them is Lubbock in October. In both 2009 and 2011 high power offenses came into town only to be stunned. In ’09the 7th ranked Raiders had to have Crabtree dance along the sideline as time ran out, and last year Seth Doege threw for 441 yds and 4 TDs while Landry Jones threw for 412 yds and 5 TDs but an interception he threw and a fumble proved to be the Sooners Achilles heel. In short if the Red Raider fans can keep the magic going and will on there team … Geno Smiths first loss this season can be accomplished.

I Need A Dollar

Awesome just Awesome.

Applied Photography

Recently got into film & photography with NTK. Just looking at this picture says so much. I am not a big bears fan but I am a big fan of Urlacher. This picture not only highlights him but also his position in the center suggests the importance he plays in the teams success.  Even the flash from the camera implies that his talent makes others around him shine that much brighter.

Welcome Back Eddie Johnson

Red River Rivalry (Week 7 2012)

#15 Texas and #13 Oklahoma continue their legendary rivalry this season.  The two teams have not quite lived up to their expectations this season and this game used to be a preview for the Big 12 championship game. So there is a lot missing from the atmosphere in Dallas this weekend. But don’t think that this won’t be a good game.

Oklahoma off 41-20 romp of the Red Raiders in Lubbock, a game in which Landry Jones went 25 of 40 for 259 yds and 2 TDs. Though this is an awesome output from OU the only reason it is a key stat coming into this game is the Longhorn defensive has been horrendous. Lou Holtz found that the yds per attempt allowed by this years team is the second worst in Longhorn history. The thing I would concentrate on as a Sooner would be the running game to keep the ball away from the efficient David Ash. Though OU didn’t show this off against Texas Tech if Damien Williams can have a ‘break out’ game against the Longhorn defense then David Ash and the surprisingly good offense from Austin won’t have a chance to respond.

Longhorns need defense. Not turnovers, not big hard psychological hits, just defense. Three n outs, tackles for a loss, broken up passes, and solid tackling. If the Longhorn defense can get 3 or more OU possessions to be scoreless the game is close.

ENJOY THE STATE FAIR!

Mike Leach is all out of “easy” games (Week 6 2012)

With the last two games for The Cougars I has become more apparent for the new coach that he is not playing in the Big 12 anymore. Teams in the Pac 12 are faster and thus score quickly. Now granted he has a quick score offense but it requires experience like any complex offense. Lack of familiarity proved key in this weeks loss to Oregon State. And t he WSU schedule of Cal, @Stanford, @Utah, UCLA, @ASU, and WASH doesn’t allow for many more growing pains.

The Beavers defense caused 5 turn overs 3 if which were interceptions made by Jordan Poyer. Poyer second interception actually forced Coach Leach to sub in his back up QB, Jeff Tuel. I can’t say whether or not that was the bestbcall to make as I didn’t see the game but I know it is better to keep faith in yor starter unless your going to switch starters all together.
Next week Mike Leach must face the struggling Golden Bears of Cal who are coming off an impressive upset victory over an exciting looking UCLA Bruins team. If this was Mike Leach’s Texas Tech team I would say get ready for a possible offensive explosion but its not and I think if he doesn’t stick with a QB Cal can easily make it two in a row.
